7 Traits of a Successful Mobile Stylist

At Cribcut, we’re excited to be changing the hair industry one stylist at a time. By giving stylists the tools and training they need to take their skill, talent, and passion on the road, we open up a whole new world of opportunity for stylists who were previously tied down to a single salon.

What we're doing is certainly different. Cribcut has become a disrupter to the beauty industry and is bringing a whole new element to the delivery of hair services: convenience.

And the stylists who have joined us? They aren't your cookie-cutter hairstylists; they're driven, motivated, talented, and entrepreneurial. They’re on board with the Cribcut mission and thrilled to be part of this major industry shift.

Wondering what exactly it takes to make it as a mobile stylist? Check out these 7 important traits to see if you could become the next Cribcut success story!

What It Takes to Succeed as a Mobile Stylist

Although we haven’t had any complaints from our mobile stylist partners, we also know that this path isn’t for everyone. To thrive as a mobile hairstylist, you need to be:

1. Passionate

First and foremost, you must have a real passion for hairstyling. You can’t be in it half-heartedly, or your clients will find out pretty fast. (And clients who think you don’t care about what you’re doing aren’t likely to leave good reviews, re-book with you, or tell their friends about you.)

You have to truly care about your clients and and be excited about giving them the hairstyles they want. You need to be enthusiastic about what you do so that you can enter their homes and offices with a confident, friendly attitude.

You might be thinking, “But you need to have passion to be a stylist in the first place!” And that’s definitely true, but that’s not all it takes to succeed in mobile hairstyling. You first must be passionate...and then you have to have the next 6 traits, too!

2. Confident

Here’s where mobile styling starts to differ from more traditional jobs. To succeed as a mobile stylist, you have to feel confident about going out on your own.

As an independent business owner with Cribcut, you'll be working for yourself and by yourself. You'll be entering people’s homes without any other stylists’ support. Since you won’t be able to bounce ideas off of other stylists, you have to be confident in what you do and be able to execute immaculate styles.

Ultimately, you have to be able to consult with yourself regarding the best possible outcome for your client.

3. Entrepreneurial

More than just independent, a successful mobile stylist will also have a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Why? Because Cribcut stylists are entrepreneurs, and entrepreneurs have to take risks, be persistent, and show grit and perseverance to help them get the outcomes they want.

While Cribcut will be there as your strong second-in-command and will give you all the right tools to help you succeed, it still comes down to YOU: how you treat your clients, how reliable you are, and how much effort you put in.

That’s the beauty of being your own boss! The power is in your hands to succeed.

4. Go-Getter

You may have all the right tools in hand, but you still have to be a go-getter in order to turn your dreams into a profitable and sustainable reality.

To really make it in the world of mobile styling, you have to be willing to put in the work every single day—whether that means driving around town and leaving your business cards, marketing yourself through local online groups, or going the extra mile to make that last client of the day happy.

No matter how much marketing you do, there are always more ways to promote yourself. You have to to be willing to push yourself to the limit and do anything necessary to see your business thrive.

5. Self-Motivated

Some people are able to work hard...but only when they’re being monitored by someone else. If you’re the kind of person who needs a direct supervisor or the threat of a looming deadline in order to get things accomplished, mobile styling probably isn’t for you.

With Cribcut, you'll be in charge of your own schedule, product sales, appointment booking, and much more. You must be driven and motivated to run your own business successfully. As much as Cribcut is here to support you, the more effort you put in, the greater results you will see when it comes to growing your business.

That means that you must be committed to:

  • Going above and beyond for clients and ensuring they pre-book their next appointment
  • Being 100% reliable and on-time to every appointment
  • Making sure NO HAIR is left behind
  • Marketing your business in your free time
  • Executing fabulous hairstyles
  • And so much more!

Whatever it takes to grow your business, you have to be dedicated to do.

6. Empathetic

This one shouldn’t be a surprise. To be a successful mobile stylist, you first have to be a good stylist. And as you know, being a good stylist means caring about your clients: listening to their needs, making sure they’re satisfied, and putting in the work it takes to build real relationships with them.

All of these requirements are simply amplified when you decide to go mobile. Because you’re entering your clients’ homes and offices (rather than them coming to you), you have be especially attentive to their needs. You have to respect their personal environment, their schedule, the secrets they share...and of course their styling vision!

7. Different

Last but not least, let’s circle back to the trait we mentioned at the very beginning of this post. To really succeed as a mobile stylist, you have to be a little different.

You have to like thinking outside of the box and have an itch to do something out of the ordinary. You have to be someone who’s not satisfied with the status quo: the 50/50 commission splits, the lack of freedom and flexibility, the boredom of working at the same salon chair day in and day out. You should always be looking for new ways of doing things and pushing yourself to be the best you can possibly be.
